Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) to Bestow Honorary Doctorate Upon Richard Macdonald

Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) will grant an honorary doctorate to American Sculptor Richard MacDonald

Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) will grant an honorary doctorate to Richard MacDonald at the 2015 Commencement Ceremony, 4:00 p.m., Monday May 18 on Main Campus in Laguna Beach.

MacDonald, an internationally renowned sculptor, will receive this honor in recognition of his dedication to the pursuit of excellence in representational figurative sculpture. MacDonald is also the Honorary Chair of LCAD’s Sculpture department and in 2014 taught a Master Class on the LCAD campus. MacDonald and LCAD share a mutual commitment to classical fine arts education and to the advancement of figurative sculpture for the next generation of students and collectors.

“As artists, we all have seminal moments that mark a significant turning point in our lives,” said LCAD President Jonathan Burke. “For me personally, watching Richard work alongside our students was one of those inspiring moments that will forever resonate with me. He has been a generous and close friend to our college and his gracious contributions of his time and energy to our students is truly exceptional.”

For MacDonald, figurative sculpture today leads fine art in its tradition of veracity to the human form whose roots trace to Michelangelo and Rodin.

“In an age where technological advances take us further away from mutual points of reference,” said MacDonald, “art inspires an awareness of the shared human experience. This vision is vital to our global culture, and LCAD is a leader in training new figurative artists for the future.”
