Newport Beach Lifeguard Saves Swimmer

A lifeguard battled turbulent surf late Monday night to bring in a man trapped in a strong current 150 yards offshore.

Newport Beach Lifeguards rescued a swimmer who went missing 150 yards off the pier Monday night.

Battling large and turbulent surf, a lifeguard was able to bring the man into shore three blocks down the beach from where he found him due to the force of the current.

When the first Newport Beach Fire Department Fire and Lifeguard units arrived at 9:30 Monday night, they found one male swimmer approximately 150 yards offshore in a swift current, according to a statement released by the fire department.

A Huntington Beach helicopter helped track the swimmer in choppy water, and Newport Beach Police officers helped the lifeguard cary the man to shore where he was treated by paramedics and rushed to the hospital.
