Newport Beach Mayor Makes Wyland Water Conservation Pledge

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Newport Beach Mayor Diane Dixon pledged to conserve water by taking part in the Wyland National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, and she's challenging you to join her to conserve our most vital resource.

The Wyland Mayor’s Challenge is a national community campaign to inspire residents and businesses to make a series of informative and easy-to-do online pledges to use water more efficiently and to reduce energy use and pollution.

The challenge goes beyond the issue of drought by raising awareness of current practices that, if left unchanged, would affect communities in the future—from how food is grown to reducing polluted runoff from entering our waterways.

“I am excited to include the city of Newport Beach in this Challenge,” Mayor Diane Dixon stated. “I am certain the residents and business community of Newport Beach will make the pledge to use water and energy efficiently. The natural beauty of our bay and ocean that surrounds Newport Beach has always been our top priority.

"Taking this pledge to save water reduces energy and pollution – improving our bay and ocean water quality. On behalf of our residents and business community, I applaud the Wyland Foundation and wholeheartedly accept the Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation.”

The challenge runs from April 1 through April 30, 2019. Community members can make their pledge online at www.mywaterpledge.com

Last year, residents from over 3,800 cities in all 50 states pledged to reduce their annual consumption of freshwater by three-billion gallons; reduce waste sent to landfills by 79.9 million pounds; and prevent more than 177,000 pounds of hazardous waste from entering watersheds.

To participate, residents can make a series of online pledges to conserve water on behalf of the city of Newport Beach.

Cities across the nation compete in five-population categories; Newport Beach is in the 30,000-99,999 residents category. The residents in the cities with the highest percentage of pledges in each category are entered into drawings for hundreds of eco-friendly prizes including home improvement gift cards, home irrigation equipment, and the grand prize of a $5,000 home utility bill payment.

The challenge gives residents a chance to nominate a deserving charity that would benefit from receiving a 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and features multiple conservation resources and tips.
