OCC to Host Pilates Guest Lecture Series

OCC's Pilates Guest Speaker Series this fall gives students, teachers a chance to explore deeper topics within the discipline.

The Orange Coast College dance department will host its ninth annual Pilates Guest Speaker Series from Sept. 9 to Nov. 18. The series of five lecture-activity workshops will be held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the months from 1:30–3:30 p.m. in the College’s Art Center, Rooms 147 or 148, and are open to the public. Lectures will be given in small intimate groups and each lecture is $20. Attendees also can purchase all five lectures for $85. The workshops are free for OCC students, faculty and staff.

“These workshops are aimed at assisting both teachers and students in understanding how Pilates and complementary therapies can improve body form and function,” said OCC Dance Instructor Amelie Hunter. “This year will bring a wide range of professionals to OCC to discuss diverse topics relayed to deeper understanding of Pilate’s principles and new ways to challenge core strength, decrease back pain and create a more mindful practice.”

The series begins on Sept. 9 with a lecture by Sue Okuda Stewart entitled “Imagery and Movement: Cues for Optimal Results.” Other workshop topics include “Improving Your Pilates With the Konnector” on Sept. 23 featuring a device invented by Viktor Uygan, owner of Konnect Pilates Studio in Mission Viejo, “Pilates for Back Pain” on Oct. 14, “The Mind, Body, Breath Connection” by Ryan Lee on Oct. 28, and a special “Ron Fletcher” mat class on Nov. 18.
