Racist Flyer Telling Black Tenants to Be Quiet Is a Mystery, Property Management Says
The Toscana Apartments property firm denies posting a flier asking African Americans to "keep it down." A photo of the flyer went viral.
A spokesman for the firm that owns an Irvine apartment complex where a racist flier was supposedly posted in an elevator denied the company had anything to do with it and said officials were “outraged” by it.
An image of the flier, said to be posted on Instagram, went viral on social media today. It supposedly posted in an elevator in the Toscana Apartments, 35 Via Lucca, but apartment managers have found no trace of it, according to Marty McKenna, a spokesman for Chicago-based Equity Residential.
“The flier is fake,” McKenna told City News Service. “It was not created or posted by any employee of Equity Residential. We are outraged by its content and we’re investigating the matter.”

The flier admonishes tenants to keep it down at night with a bold-faced section directed at “African-American residents.”
“We also would like to remind our African-American residents to keep conversation volume down and reduce music levels between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.,” an image of the flier read. “Multiple complaints have bheen made regarding this issue.”

McKenna said a “concerned citizen” emailed him this morning about the flier. A search of the property about 7:30 a.m. failed to locate the flier, McKenna said.
Overnight, Instagram user teyent_theequeenb posted a picture of the flier, adding, “I found this in my elevator a few minutes ago. Lord give me strength to finish school in Irvine. I’m still not sure if my eyes are playing tricks on me.”
