Watch: Pair of Great Whites Spotted Playing in OC Surf

Lifeguards are warning swimmers and surfers to beware of two young Great Whites patrolling Surfside.

Seal Beach lifeguards are warming swimmers to beware of two Great White sharks seen swimming in Surfside over the last day.

Reports of the two juvenile, five to six foot white sharks swimming outside the surf line off of Surfside beach, began coming in Tuesday, and lifeguards spotted the sharks Wednesday morning, said Seal Beach Marine Safety Department Chief Joe Bailey.

According to Bailey, a news helicopter also spotted the sharks in the surf just after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The Great White sightings are extremely rare for Seal Beach.

“This is rare,” confirmed Bailey, who has never had to issue a shark warning in his 26-year career in Seal Beach. “They are usually just moving through the area.”

City officials chose not to close down the beach because sharks this young usually don’t pose a threat. They typically prey upon small bait fish such as sardines, anchovies and grunion.

In recent days, fishermen have reported an increase in baitfish activity near Surfside.

“The Seal Beach Marine Safety Department has posted signs on the beach warning beachgoers of the possible hazard. As we continue to monitor Surfside, Marine Safety is also working with neighboring beaches to monitor for any shark activity,” city officials announced in a written release.

“We just want to warn people that they are out there, said Bailey.
