LaBonge Pays Tribute to Songwriting Legend Jerry Leiber

The man responsible for such hits as 'Hound Dog' and 'Stand by Me' dies at age 78.

Los Angeles District 4 City Councilman Tom LaBonge issued a statement Monday in reaction to the death of songwriting legend Jerry Leiber, who, along with writing partner Mike Stoller, was responsible for such classics as "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "Yakety-Yak" and "Stand by Me."

Leiber died Monday of heart failure at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles at the age of 78.

“Jerry Leiber was one of the all-time great songwriters,” said LaBonge in the statement. “Jerry and Mike Stoller both came out of Los Angeles City College, and their tremendous hit parade of songs make this city proud. With Leiber providing the words and Stoller making the music, the songwriting team churned out some of the great records of all time. Jerry Leiber will be sorely missed.”
