10-Hour SigAlert: Overturned Big Rig Dogs San Fernando Valley Commute

Caltrans has to unload 75,000 pounds of dog food from an overturned big rig on the 5/210 freeway connector.

LOS ANGELES, CA — An overturned big rig in the Sylmar area snarled the Golden State (5) Freeway and the Foothill (210) Freeway Monday, triggering a nearly 10-hour SigAlert as Caltrans crews unload 75,000 pounds of dog food from the wreckage.

The crash occurred just after 5 a.m. and shut down the connector from the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway to the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway, as well as the southbound 5 Freeway Truck Route connector to both the northbound and southbound sides of the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Nasir.

The CHP expects the transition road to be closed until 3 or 4 p.m. Monday, he said.

"It depends on how quickly we can get the big rig up and out of there," said Nasir. "The collision is still under investigation."

The closure has traffic backed up for miles in the area, and commuters are advised to seek alternate routes.
