Brothers Lose Mother, Family Dog In Deadly Novato Crash

NOVATO, CA — A fundraiser has been launched for two young men who lost their mother and family dog in a deadly Novato crash this week, leaving the brothers without any immediate family, according to the fundraiser.

Mary Coleen Murphy, 59, was walking the family's dog, Andre, when they were struck by a car Monday night while crossing Novato Boulevard near St. Paul Circle, according to police and the fundraiser.

Murphy was taken to a hospital, where lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. Andre also died in the crash. Police said the 18-year-old driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators. Impairment did not appear to be a factor.

Murphy left behind her sons, Emmett and Shane Murphy, who are 23 and 21. Their father died when they were children, leaving their mother as their sole provider, according to the GoFundMe.

The fundraiser stated Murphy worked at Safeway in Mill Valley for more than 30 years and was known by customers and colleagues for her kindness and warm personality.

“She was a cherished employee and a bright light in the community,” the fundraiser said.

Money raised through the campaign will help the brothers pay for funeral and burial costs as well as living expenses they now face on their own.

A separate meal train has also been organized to provide food for the brothers as they cope with their mother's death.

Police said Murphy was crossing Novato Boulevard around 9 p.m. Monday when she and Andre were struck by an eastbound sedan.

The collision remains under investigation by the Novato Police Department's Traffic Investigation Team and Crime Scene Investigations unit.
