Financial Support for Family Caregivers

How can family caregivers be compensated?

Well-Deserved Financial Support

We know that the need for family caregivers is on the rise. With that need comes a new set of challenges not only for the one being cared for but for the caregiver. The level of support a caregiver needs is dependent upon numerous factors: degree of caregiver’s dependency upon the caregiver and the financial situation of the one providing that loving care. Over and over again, family caregivers ask - when they have the time to do so – what resources are available for them?

It’s a good question to ask because family caregivers often spend a large portion of their income (and savings) to care for their loved ones. Many take unpaid leave from work or even quit to take care of this important matter. It’s important to note here that along with loss of job in many cases comes loss of retirement and health coverage, not to mention social security benefits.

Contact the National To that end, get in touch with the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys to find someone in a specific location to help work out the details.

Services such as Medicaid may also be able to provide financial support. However, they vary state by state. It’s a good idea to check in with a local office to find out what exactly is available.

On a final note, caregiving expenses may be tax deductible. In some instances, the one being cared for may be considered a dependent. His or her medical expenses may also be deductible. To learn more, visit the IRS website.
