A John Korty Film Event by Novato Theater Film Club

The Novato Theater Film Club will showcase the film Miracle in a Box – A Piano Reborn, at Trek Winery, 1026 Machin Avenue, Novato on Sunday, November 16 from 4-7 p.m. In addition to this extraordinary film, the event will feature a lively discussion / Q&A with the film’s Oscar Winning Filmmaker, John Korty and John Callahan, Owner/Operator of Callahan Piano Service. Light refreshments are included (Wine & Beer available). Cost is $10 for Film Club Members, $15 for Non-Members and a Senior Special of only $8. Miracle in a Box is an inspiring film about the coming together of three events: the bequest of a 1927 Steinway Grand Piano, the U.C. Berkeley student competition to win it, and the months and months of work by Callahan Piano artisans to make it sing again. The First Berkeley Piano Competition provides most of the music in the film with six talented finalists playing several classical selections. Appearing on screen are Garrick Ohlsson, touring concert pianist, Jake Heggie, opera composer, Tammy Hall, jazz artist, Frederick Hodges, music stylist, Jerry Kuderna, Bay Area modernist and Steve Willis, blues and boogie songwriter and performer. Narrated by distinguished actor, John Lithgow and the film-maker is Oscar-winning documentarian, John Korty.

This “captivating” film won many accolades including: Best Documentary, 2010 California Independent Film Festival; Audience Choice Award for Best Short Film, 2010 San Luis Obispo International Film Festival; Official Selection of the 2009 Mill Valley Film Festival, 2009 Port Townsend Film Festival, 2010 Sundial Film Festival and the 2010 Mendocino Film Festival.
