Neighbor Dispute Over Parking Space Ends With 'Hate Crime' Arrest
A Gun Violence Restraining Order was also filed against the suspect.

NOVATO, CA — A Novato man has been arrested on suspicion of a hate crime after he allegedly fought with his neighbor over a parking space and threatened to report him to the authorities for allegedly being undocumented.
Police were called to the Olive Avenue area on Tuesday on a report of a neighborhood dispute. A man said his neighbor threatened to shoot him over a disagreement over access to a parking space. He also alleged that the neighbor made threats to notify the U.S. government that he was in the U.S. illegally, which police said was an assumption based on the man's race.
After an investigation, police arrested Douglas Shannon, 64, on suspicion of committing a hate crime. Officers also allege they found a legally owed and registered firearm in Shannon's residence, which he turned over to the police. However, no gun was used during the incident, police clarified.
