Novato Election 2017 Results: Incumbents Re-Elected

Novato voters decided on a council contest and two local measures during the November 2017 election.

NOVATO, CA – Voters re-elected Mayor Denise Athas and Councilwoman Pat Eklund to the Novato City Council, according to unofficial results released Tuesday night by the Marin County Registrar of Voters. The incumbents beat out challenger and communications strategist Kevin Morrison for the two open seats.

With all the precincts reporting, Eklund was in first place with about 37.6 percent of the vote, nearly neck-in-neck with Athas, who was in second place with about 37.2 percent. Morrison received about 24.3 percent of the vote.

According to unofficial results released by the Registrar of Voters, voters overwhelmingly passed Measure D, which will continue the city's 20-year urban growth boundary in the General Plan until Dec. 31, 2042. The plan was originally approved in November 1997.

Proponents claimed the urban growth boundary helps preserve Novato's small town character and fosters better planning and development.

The measure needed a simple majority approval to pass. Nearly 72.7 percent of voters voted in favor of the measure, while about 27.3 percent voted against.

Measure E, however, failed, according to unofficial results. The 18-year parcel tax would have helped pay for flood control projects.

The measure needed two-thirds approval. About 67.2 percent of voters voted against the measure, while about 32.8 percent voted in favor. Residents living within Marin County Flood Control District Zone No. 1, which covers most of Novato, voted on the proposed tax.
