Novato Man Seriously Injured In Fall From Mule In Hawaii

An employee of Molokai Mule Tour also suffered head and torso injuries.

NOVVATO, CA – A 54-year-old Novato man was seriously injured Thursday when he fell from a mule on a trail on the Hawaiian island of Molokai.

The man was knocked unconscious and suffered head injuries, according to Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto with the Maui County Department of Fire & Public Safety. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical
Center.

A 36-year-old female employee of Molokai Mule Tour suffered head and torso injuries when she fell because the Novato man's mule ran into the mule she was riding, Taomoto said. She was taken to Molokai General Hospital.

Both riders were listed in serious condition Friday.Firefighters hiked down the Kalaupapa Trail to one of several switchbacks to reach the riders, who were about halfway down the 3.2-mile cliffside trail, Taomoto said.

Three rangers from Kalaupapa National Historical Park were hiking up the trail at the same time and reached the parties first, Taomoto said.

Both injured riders were taken off the trail by a helicopter.
