Largest U.S. Air Force Plane Crash Lands At Travis AFB

The C-5M Super Galaxy​ landed "nose gear up" Thursday night, officials with the Northern California military base said.

FAIRFIELD, CA — An investigation is underway after a C-5M Super Galaxy — the largest aircraft in the U.S. Air Force's fleet and among the largest military cargo planes in the world — crash landed wheels up Thursday night at Travis AFB in Fairfield.

The airfcraft landed "nose gear up" at approximately 7:45 p.m. upon returning from a contingency mission, base officials said.

Eleven aircrew assigned to the 349th Air Mobility Wing were aboard the plane at the time of the incident, none of whom reported any injuries, according to a statement put out by officials with the Northern California military installation.

Emergency responders arrived on scene immediately to assist and secure the area, Travis AFB officials said.

The C-5M is a strategic transport aircraft, with a wingspan of more than 222 feet and a length of 247 feet, the officials said.

The incident remained under investigation Friday; military officials said more information would be released as it became available.

Authorities also noted that Travis AFB still has an operable runway following Thursday night's incident.
