"The Novato Unified School District is deeply saddened by this tragedy," Novato Unified School District Superintendent Kris Cosca said in a letter. "Our condolences, hearts and thoughts go out to the families and friends of these three students."

Lupercio was on San Marin High School's football team.

The Mustangs team posted a photo of Lupercio in uniform on its Facebook profile Monday.

The team's coaches met with their players when they learned of Lupercio's death, according to the social media post.

"We want to to convey to all parents, kids and our extended Mustang family that if anyone needs help dealing with our loss, please do not hesitate to contact any of the coaches or staff," the post read. "Our Mustang team and community is a family and when one of us hurts, we all hurt. We will be here to lift each other up today and always – and help with the healing process."

Cosca said a team of counselors will be available for students this week at campuses in the district.

"During times of tragedy, it is essential that we come together to support and care for one another," Cosca said. "We are blessed to live in a community that will wrap its arms around all of those affected by this tragedy whether it be a student, family member, staff member, first responder, or a community member who rose above to help with this tragic accident."

A GoFundMe page was launched to raise money for Lupercio's family. The fundraising campaign had raised more than $14,000 as of Tuesday morning.
