Here are the top five stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- Although scorching temperatures continue to impact California, weather officials said a hurricane off the coast of Mexico will help end the record-breaking heat wave by the weekend in San Diego County. Weakening Hurricane Kay will not directly hit the county, but could bring gusty winds, heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms to the region this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Hazardous boating conditions are also expected in coastal waters around San Diego. A high wind watch will be in effect from Friday morning through evening for the county's coastal areas, mountains and valleys. (Patch)
- It's that time of year again. Pumpkin products are popping up on shelves and the pumpkin spice latte is back on drink menus nationwide. But maybe you want the real deal — an actual pumpkin — in your home this season. Whether you're planning to bake a pie, carve a jack-o'-lantern or just add some festive flair to your stoop, there are plenty of places to pick up a pumpkin in San Diego County. Check out the Patch guide to local Pumpkin Patches plus some tips for carving the perfect Jack O'Lantern. (Patch)
- Public transit riders will be able to enjoy free rides on MTS and NCTD routes on Oct. 5, which the agencies are declaring as Free Ride Day. All rides will be free on MTS and NCTD services for Free Ride Day, including the Trolley, COASTER, SPRINTER and fixed-route buses. Passengers will not need a PRONTO card or valid fare for either system and MTS and NCTD services will operate on a normal weekday schedule. Free Ride Day coincides with California's Clean Air Day, which is aimed at reducing emissions and improving air quality across the state, and Rideshare Week, which encourages ridesharing between Oct. 3-7. - Japanese sandwich pop-up, Naegi has found a permanent location in South Oceanside where it replaces Peruvian spot Panca. A casual counterpart to Matsu, owner William Eick's tasting menu restaurant, it's launching with a menu of Japanese sandwiches, or sandos, featuring fried chicken, egg salad, fried tofu, shrimp katsu and more along with sides like Japanese-style potato salad and green beans with tofu dressing. The counter-service space, which has a large outdoor patio is now open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eick, who's aiming to expand Naegi into multiple locations, has tapped Michael Barnett, formerly of Catalina Offshore, as its executive chef. - The hot temperatures are here to stay for a few more days and the county is reminding San Diegans that close to 100 Cool Zones are available throughout the region. The National Weather Service just extended an excessive heat warning through today and triple digit temperatures are expected in some inland areas and the deserts. To help San Diegans stay cool during the heat wave, the county and its partners have opened 97 Cool Zones throughout the region. People can enter their address once they navigate to the map and it will show locations near them. Residents can also call 2-1-1 to request information about Cool Zones, or schedule a free ride to a Cool Zone near them if they don't have access to transportation. (Press Release Desk)
