Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Frontwave Arena is coming to Oceanside in 2023. The new home of the 16-time indoor soccer champion San Diego Sockers will be called Frontwave Arena. The complex is currently under construction in the El Corazón area. When completed the 171,291 square-foot arena will host more than 6,000 fans for sporting events and up to 7,600 for concerts, with a full-service restaurant, bars and concessions, a plaza area, and sixteen luxury suites.   2. New details have emerged in GoJump's fatal plane crash in Oceanside on June 3. Federal authorities recently issued a preliminary report concerning the crash of the small airplane operated by a skydiving company near Oceanside Municipal Airport. The report suggests the pilots were dealing with an unresponsive throttle which resulted in the plane being unable to land safely on the runway. (Coast News)
  3. Camp Pendleton-trained Marine veteran, Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams, the last Medal of Honor hero from World War II passed away last week at the age of 98. Now, he will lie in honor in the US Capitol. According to a joint statement from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams will lie in honor in the Capitol rotunda. “Woody Williams embodied the best of America: living a life of duty, honor and courage,” Pelosi said. Schumer said: “Woody Williams was an American hero who embodied the best of our country and the greatest generation.” (ABC 10 News San Diego KGTV)
  4. The American Red Cross is asking people to donate blood and platelets this summer, especially around the Fourth of July. Red Cross blood drives are being held across San Diego County. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at a blood drive. Anyone who donates blood or platelets through July 10 will receive a Red Cross recycled cotton tote bag, while supplies last. (San Diego Patch)
  5. The driver of a submerged vehicle safely swam to shore Tuesday in Mission Bay. The incident occurred near Crown Point Park, around 4:45 a.m., according to the San Diego Police Department. Upon arrival, first responders — including lifeguards and divers — found the man swam to land. Police were working to recover the vehicle from the water as of 8 a.m. (City News Service)
