Here are the top four stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. A 22-year-old female was killed after being shot by an unknown male pedestrian while driving in a vehicle with male friends who got into an argument with the shooter. Oceanside police officers responded to a medical aid at Bush Street and Archer Street, just a few blocks away from the Joe Balderrama Recreation Center on Saturday at 11:44 a.m. The officers provided medical aid until medics arrived and transported her to Tri-City Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. While at the scene, officers noticed the victim had actually sustained a single gunshot wound to her upper body. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  2. The San Diego County Vector Control Program (VCP) will conduct its third routine aerial mosquito-fighting larvicide application on Oceanside waterways on Wednesday, June 8 and Thursday, June 9. Granules of larvicide will be applied via helicopter to specific waterways known to breed mosquitoes throughout the San Diego region to reduce mosquito breeding and decrease the risk of West Nile virus (WNV) transmission. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
  3. Several California congressional districts always come up in discussions about control of the House of Representatives. The 49th District, which includes Oceanside is represented by Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, and is one of those districts. Regardless of whether the district straddling the San Diego-Orange County line ends up being pivotal in November, the election there promises to be a close one. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  4. Firefighters with Cal Fire San Diego quelled a brush fire that consumed two acres on Sunday. The blaze began as a signal fire from a dehydrated hiker in need of medical aid, officials confirmed. The fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. as it burned at least one acre. Officials used air and ground resources to stop the spread of the slow-moving fire and were mopping it up just after 4 p.m., Cal Fire San Diego tweeted. The hiker had been experiencing dehydration and admitted to setting a signal fire that got out of hand, an incident commander at the scene told Capt. Thomas Shoots of Cal Fire San Diego.
