Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- On Thursday, August 11, 25-year-old Vincente Huerta of Oceanside was arrested in Mexico. Oceanside detectives brought him into custody to be booked for the murder of 22-year-old Oceanside resident Chelsea Pacheco. On June 4, Crimes of Violence detectives discovered that the victim and her male friends were driving in a vehicle and were involved in an argument with an unknown male pedestrian. As the vehicle drove off, the unknown male shot at the vehicle. One round penetrated the rear of the vehicle and struck the victim. (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- The Oceanside City Council unanimously approved the staff's recommendation to form a new standing committee of residents to provide third-party oversight of police and fire misconduct investigations. The committee will review and make recommendations regarding misconduct complaints against members of the police and fire departments. Once an investigation is completed by the police or fire department, the committee would be provided access to the entire investigation file, including audio and video recordings, according to Police Chief Fred Armijo. All personal identifying information will be redacted. (Coast News)
- The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that more than $233 million in Federal Railroad Administration grant funding will be used to replace century-old infrastructure for 11 passenger-rail projects. In California, up to $27.3 million is earmarked for improvements in Oceanside on the Surf Line route used by Amtrak, Metrolink and BNSF freight moves. The project will replace a 100-year-old, single-track bridge over the San Luis Rey River with a two-track structure, as well as improving a grade-crossing, bike path, pedestrian underpass, grading, drainage and signals. (TRAINS Magazine)
- Authorities grounded flights and cleared Terminal 2 at San Diego International Airport Thursday following a security concern, airport officials said. The Federal Aviation Administration issued a full-ground stop for flights departing from Terminal 2 after a passenger bypassed a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint around 12:25 p.m. without having a bag screened, according to the airport and the TSA. TSA officers searched for the traveler but were unable to find him, TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers said in a statement sent to Patch. The TSA then cleared Terminal 2 East and West. Passengers also had to get off planes that were departing from the terminal. (San Diego Patch)
- An alleged hitman who was convicted in Texas of aggravated assault in a botched murder-for-hire scheme is now the suspect in the killing of a 47-year-old Hemet woman whose body was found stuffed in her car trunk. Michael Lee Lorence, 46, of Hemet was arrested last week in San Diego County on suspicion of murder in the death of Melanie Beth Conroy. Hemet police homicide detectives located the victim's car in the parking lot of a Park & Ride in the city of Vista on July 29. (San Diego Patch)
