Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:
- A small plane crashed on Friday afternoon just east of Oceanside Airport in an empty field off Foussat Road and Highway 76, according to multiple news sources. Two people were aboard a GoJump Oceanside aircraft at the time of the crash. A woman on the plane who was transferred by ambulance to Tri-City Medical was pronounced dead, according to Oceanside police, who also reported that the other passenger was a man. - An Oceanside man has been charged by federal prosecutors with threatening to kill Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York in a voicemail message left at Schumer's Washington, D.C. office last month. Jonathan Ryan McGuire is accused of sending a profane message to Schumer -- the Democratic Senate majority leader -- in which he threatened to "blow your (expletive) head off" and "send some bullets your way," according to an FBI agent's affidavit filed in San Diego federal court. - A man was hospitalized after being struck by a train in Oceanside on Thursday night. A North County Transit District Coaster hit the pedestrian around 10:45 p.m. near the intersection of Cassidy and South Meyers streets in Oceanside, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The man was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, sheriff's Deputy Jason Burk said. His name, age and condition were not released. (Carlsbad Patch)
- The USA Surfing Championships will be held in Oceanside on June 14-18, presented by Playa Bowls, Got Milk and Toyota. Registration is open now through June 9 to compete in body surfing, stand-up paddle and prone technical and distance racing, SUP surf, longboard, adult shortboard and para surfing.
