Here are the top stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. The Surfrider Foundation has filed an appeal with the California Coastal Commission challenging Oceanside's approval of the restoration of a two-block-long rock revetment that protects beachfront homes along South Pacific Street. The repairs to the degraded seawall need a coastal development permit from the Coastal Commission, states the appeal filed May 6 by the environmental nonprofit. Also, the property owners should be required to mitigate for beach sand lost because of the revetment. (The San Diego Union-Tribune)
  2. An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.6 struck Monday afternoon near Julian in San Diego County. Did you feel it? The quake was reported at 2:35 p.m. about 14 miles east of Julian, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake had a depth of 7 miles. A 2.6-preliminary magnitude quake was reported about three minutes later in the same location. The initial earthquake was felt as far south as the city of San Diego. (San Diego Patch)
  3. If you haven't yet visited the colorful flowers at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch, you have a second chance. The Flower Fields has extended its season for an extra week.
The season was set to end on Mother's Day but will now run through May 15, the team at The Flower Fields announced Monday. There are roughly 14 acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus still in bloom. The Sea of Sunflowers, a five-acre patch featuring all colors, shapes and sizes of sunflowers, is also in peak bloom. (Carlsbad Patch)
  4. The San Diego County Public Defender Office is again looking to recognize teens for their accomplishments or contributions to the community. Anyone may nominate a teen through Sept. 15 for consideration in the fourth annual 25 Most Remarkable Teens. (Press Release Desk)
  5. San Diego County Fire, CAL FIRE and the community of Mt. Laguna celebrated the completion of the County's highest elevation fire station, sitting at about 6,000 feet.
"I am honored to recognize the grand opening of Mt. Laguna Fire Station #49," shared Supervisor Joel Anderson. "I am thankful for all the firefighters and staff that keep our County safe—and I am hopeful that this strategically placed fire station will help them do just that." (Press Release Desk)
