Oceanside Chamber presents Operation Appreciation at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater on May 21! A day of fun and recognition for all active-duty military and their families as they are treated to a day of free food, entertainment and a fun zone for kids. Here are the top stories in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton today:
- Last year, 8,835 wildfires in the Golden State leveled 3,629 structures. In Oceanside, 24,944 properties have some risk of being affected by wildfire over the next 30 years. This represents 53% of all properties in Oceanside. Overall, Oceanside has a moderate risk of wildfire over the next few decades, according to First Street's Risk Factor website. - The annual Operation Appreciation returns to the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater Saturday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. The Oceanside Chamber brings the business community and area residents together to provide a day of recognition to all active-duty military stationed on Marine Corps Base Camp Joseph H. Pendleton and nearby military bases. Thousands of active-duty military, their family and dependents are treated to a day of free food, entertainment and a fun zone for kids (Oceanside-Camp Pendleton Patch)
- The San Diego Zoo is extending its hours this summer during "Nighttime Zoo." Starting June 3, the zoo will stay open later and offer live entertainment from a variety of artists, special summer treats, and an opportunity to see animals at nighttime. Entertainment will include acrobats, dancers, musical performers and Dr. Zoolittle, according to the zoo. (San Diego Patch)
- An auto-theft suspect led police and sheriff's personnel on a pursuit across northern San Diego County Monday before crashing the stolen car he was driving and making a failed attempt to escape on foot. Brandon Scroggins, 42, allegedly failed to yield when Carlsbad police tried to pull him over about 11:15 a.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, which joined in the road chase after it entered neighboring Encinitas. - The city of San Diego announced Monday more than $840,000 can be returned to nearly 1,070 residents and business owners who have paid for city services or have done business with the city during the last three years. The individual refund amounts range from $1 to $77,500. According to the city, the most common types of unclaimed monies are returned checks for overpayment of business taxes, overpaid utilities and other fees. Checks that remain uncashed after six months become unclaimed money. (San Diego Patch)
