Catalytic Converter Thieves Caught In SMC: Police

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Two people were arrested following an attempted catalytic converter theft at a downtown parking garage that led to a vehicle pursuit and a multi-agency investigation, according to the South San Francisco Police Department.

Officers said they responded at about 1:24 a.m. to reports of multiple suspects attempting to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle inside the Miller Parking Garage.

As officers responded, police dispatchers used the city's camera system to monitor the suspects and provide real-time updates on their movements and the car's description. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the suspects fled, prompting a pursuit.

The pursuit was later discontinued after the suspects drove the wrong way onto a Highway 101 off-ramp and entered the freeway, creating what police described as an unacceptable risk to public safety.

Investigators said they later located the suspect vehicle in Brisbane with assistance from the Brisbane Police Department.

Officers identified and arrested two people believed to be the primary suspects in the attempted theft.

Police have not released the identities 0f the suspects at this time.
