Pacifica American Looks to Bounce Back From Tough Loss

A 2-0 loss to Woodcreek in Thursday night's double-elimination championship was Pacifica American's first tournament setback and just its second loss in 13 games. The 9-and 10-year-old all-stars can still win the title tonight.

The Pacifica American Express hit a speed bump.

Standing on the brink of a Northern California Division 2 championship, the 9-and 10-year-olds’ high-powered offense got shut down in a 2-0 loss to Woodcreek (Roseville) in a double-elimination tournament championship game.

But because Thursday night’s game was Pacifica’s first loss, it get another chance at the title when the two teams play again today at 7 p.m. at Stonehouse Field in Rancho Murieta (near Sacramento).

Pacifica (12-2) experienced its only other loss under similar circumstances in the double-elimination District 3 tournament. Pacifica bounced back from an 8-5 loss to Danville on July 18, trouncing the same opponent 10-0 in a game that was mercy-ruled after four innings.

“They really don’t get to up or too down,” Pacifica manager Steve Falk told Patch.

“The last time we lost we came back and played our best game.”

Thursday’s game, however, wasn’t Pacifica’s best, as a team that combined for 20 homers in its first 13 games never put together much of a scoring threat, Falk said.

Christian Falk (the coach’s son) struck out seven batters and allowed one walk in 4 2/3 innings of two-hit ball.

Woodcreek scored two unearned runs off Falk in a decisive bottom of the fifth inning.
