Pacifica School District Receives $50,000 to Train Math Teachers

Money will go toward aiding staff collaboration in teaching Algebra 1

The Pacifica School District has received a $50,000 grant from a regional organization to better train middle school math teachers. 

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) announced today that it would give the district the money for a second year of its Equity and Excellence through Collaboration and Coaching program, which aims to help students successfully complete Algebra 1 by supporting collaboration between teachers, coaches and principals. 

"We're very excited," said Pacifica School District Superintendent Wendy Tukloff. "Pacifica School Distrcit has had a relationship with the Silicon Valley Community Foundation for many years so we're trying to go deeper and carry on the work we've already established. We feel very fortunte to contiunue to work with them."

Rebecca Salner, spokeswoman for the SVCF, said that during the competitive grant application process, her organization was looking for "research-based professional development or training for middle school math teachers that would increase their effectiveness to teach kids math, specifically Algebra 1 because it's such a critical skill level."

Other schools and organizations in the region, including some in Belmont and Brisbane, received part of the more than $1 million in grants announced today. Here's a complete list of grantees.
