Palisadian Releases Piggy Nation Chapter Book

Palisades author Richard Rosser wrote the book with help from two local Girl Scout Troops.

Imagine a world where you could pull into a parking lot and immediately find an empty space without fear that someone else might swoop in and snag it. Imagine a Southern California freeway where all drivers are looking at the road … instead of at their cellphones. Finally, imagine your lawn free of the smelly evidence that Rover paid you a visit. Believe it or not, this is all possible in Piggy Nation, a world created by Palisadian author and playwright Richard Rosser.

Rosser is releasing his very first chapter book Piggy Nation Let's Go Camping on Oct. 29. Rosser said the girls from Palisades Girl Scout Troops 6125 and 3965 helped him brainstorm the basic idea for the book during a creative writing workshop. In the book, a character, named Virginia Hamhock, goes on a camping trip with fellow scouts. Under the supervision of Virginia's father, the girls "use their scouting skills to combat piggy behavior," as Rosser summarized. But, he said, the real fun starts when the sun sets and the campfire begins to glow.

If the Piggy Nation concept sounds familiar, it may be because you've read his children's book Piggy Nation A Day At Work With Dad. The book was released earlier this year. Not to mention, the world premiere of Piggy Nation The Musical was held at this past spring. The performance involved composer Alec Wells, and Theatre Palisades director Dorothy Dillingham Blue.

Rosser, along with illustrator Shane Sowell, has been working on all things piggy for quite a while now and have more adventures down the road. An eBook version of Piggy Nation A Day At Work with Dad will be available soon, which will be narrated by Jim Belushi and his son, Jared. A Piggy Nation comic strip has also been running in the Sunday Oklahoman this past summer.

Just in time for Halloween, Rosser and Sowell have a treat for Pali Patch readers. Click here for a pattern, so kids can make their own Piggy Pumpkin!
