S.C.R.A.P. GALLERY EXHIBIT EXAMINES THE HIGH COST OF FAST FASHION

Statistics show the average American throws out about 70 pounds of textile waste per year. Annually, a billion articles of clothing are produced and sold around the world.

What happens to all these clothes? What is the impact on the environment?

These questions will be explored in Bursting At The Seams – The Fast Track To Slow Fashion, the new exhibition at the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery, opening Saturday, June 3 from 6-8 p.m. at 68718 E. Palm Canyon Drive, Cathedral City.

The exhibit features work by artists from around the United States, thrift store clothing as art and textile waste assemblages created by students from Painted Hills Middle School in Desert Hot Springs.

Some of the clothing in the exhibit were “re-styled” from the Angel View resale store on Pierson Boulevard in Desert Hot Springs, according to Executive Director Karen Riley of S.C.R.A.P (Student Creative Recycle Art Program.)

“There is definitely a cost, socially and environmentally, in trying to keep up with fashion trends. Underneath all the style and beauty, there is something really ugly,” said Riley. “This is a global problem and we wanted to highlight how we can educate and address it locally.”

Bursting At The Seams will run through the August.
