Filmgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic supplies.

RANCHO MIRAGE, CA - The Sunnylands Center & Gardens will hold a free "Films on the Great Lawn" screening today, kicking off three weekly screenings of classic horror films to celebrate the retreat's reopening after a summer hiatus.

Following Thursday's reopening of Sunnylands, the first of three Friday night film screenings will kick off with a viewing of the 1961 film, "The Innocents," which follows a woman tasked with caring for two children at a house she comes to believe is haunted.

The "Films on the Great Lawn" series, presented in partnership with the Palm Springs International Film Festival, will continue next Friday with "The Haunting" and Oct. 7 with "The Village of the Damned."
