AT&T Prepares for Headliner of its Own at Coachella 2017

AT&T to deploy 4 COLTs to meet a spike in mobile data demand at Coachella

In an instant, thousands of people across the country turn vacant fields and open deserts into booming cities. For days, these festival-goers live and breathe the music of their favorite artists, surrounded by new friends, eclectic art, and photo-worthy moments. When the music is playing, fans are snapping photos, videos and instantly sharing to social media.

With every moment at Coachella photo worthy, AT&T is making temporary upgrades for the event to ensure the data-hungry crowd has the most seamless memory-sharing experience by deploying 4 COLTs (Cell on Light Trucks) equipped with high-capacity Drum-Set Antenna. The Drum Set Antenna consists of 2 spherical balls with their tops and bottoms cut off— like drums. These antennas allow technicians to direct precise cellular signals wherever they need to go depending on customer need.

All this will give festival goers a better experience sharing texts, pictures and videos. The Drum Set Antenna is able to offer 30x the capacity of a traditional, single-beam antenna–not only an AT&T record, but an industry one.

Data usage on AT&T's mobile network at Coachella has experienced a dramatic climb over the last six years. Since 2011, mobile data traffic has grown 30x during the first weekend. During the first weekend of the festival last year, AT&T reported 18.2 TB of data cross its network, which equals to 53.3M selfies!

With the upgrades to the AT&T network and the amount of fans headed to California, there’s no doubt this year will break records.
