Congrats to Palo Alto High School Math Team!

The four teammates will represent the United States at an international competition.

After receiving top honors at the 17th annual international High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling, a Palo Alto High School math team has advanced to represent the U.S. at another international contest in April, school district officials said Thursday.

Students from the school’s BC Calculus Team will go on to compete at the upcoming International Mathematics Modeling Competition, according to Palo Alto Unified School District officials.

The team, composed of students Kathryn Li, Allison Zhang, Eric Foster and Andrew Lee, was selected as one of two mathematics modeling teams to represent the country.

The team’s advisor, Palo Alto High Mathematics Instructional Supervisor Radu Toma, said in a statement that the students are “truly exceptional youngsters who display all the traits excellent mathematicians have.”

The team ranked first in the nation at the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling for solving a problem based on unloading commuter trains.

Toma said “the four of them spent two full days together researching and putting together a 33-page solution augmented by 3D graphs, sketches, tables, and references.”

The contest took place between Oct. 31 and Nov. 17 and required teams to work on a problem over a consecutive 36-hour period.

The winners of the contest were announced earlier this month. According to the school district, all competition problems emphasize using math in a way that mirrors the way the world works.

For the new competition, students will receive a common problem around mid-April.
