We all know that we should follow traffic laws, scan all our mirrors and not participate in "road rage." But what other safety skills should we be practicing when driving?
Just as with walking alone at night, we should remain alert at all times. We know that talking on cell phones and texting can be dangerous while driving (and walking, for that matter). But anything that distracts you can potentially be dangerous.
For example, listening to loud music while driving is a definite no-no. If you really MUST crank up the volume, please consider opening the windows a little so you can better hear the sounds outside of your car. But if people in other cars around you are making funny faces at you, perhaps your music really is too loud. Also, please be aware that listening to loud noises (including music) for long periods of time can cause irreparable damage to our hearing.
Got kids? You know they can be distracting. It might be a good idea to sometimes follow through on your threat to "pull the car over if they don't stop making so much noise..." Dealing with rambunctious kids while driving can be very dangerous. Remind them that they can talk quietly but don't make loud noises or hand motions that can distract the driver.
Maintaining awareness is very important for our personal safety, whether it involves driving or walking alone at night. Stay alert. Stay focused. Stay safe.
