📰 News we're reading

1. AI-based newsrooms raise concerns about transparency, reliability (paloaltoonline.com) — A new AI-assisted outlet, the Palo Alto Ledger, has begun publishing local news based largely on reporting from human-staffed organizations like the Palo Alto Weekly, raising questions about transparency and originality. Journalism ethics and AI experts warn that undisclosed AI use and secondary-sourced stories risk confusing readers and undervaluing on‑the‑ground reporting, even as AI tools increasingly support legitimate newsrooms' behind‑the‑scenes work.

2. Top AI researcher's family seeks to halt cremation after alleged NorCal suicide (amedpost.com) — A 32-year-old Nvidia AI researcher was found unconscious in his Palo Alto home in July and died eight days later, but his family is fiercely contesting the official suicide ruling. They've marched to the state attorney general's office in Sacramento, seeking to halt his imminent cremation so more forensic evidence can be preserved and the circumstances of his death more fully investigated.

3. East Palo Alto plants seeds for a future urban forest (paloaltoonline.com) — East Palo Alto is ramping up its decades-long push to grow an urban forest, aiming to boost tree canopy from 13.5% toward long‑term goals that still trail nearby Palo Alto. Local leaders, schools, nonprofits and volunteers are planting hundreds of trees annually, creating new arboretums and shaded streets while stressing that backyard participation is crucial to greening the community.

4. The Creators of Come From Away Recall Living in NYC During 9/11, and How That Influenced Their Musical (playbill.com) — The creators of Come From Away reflect on living in New York during 9/11 and how those experiences shaped their hit musical about kindness after tragedy. They also reveal they've just workshopped a new neurodiversity-themed musical, Vienna, at TheaterWorks in Palo Alto, giving local theatergoers an early glimpse at a project they hope could follow a similar path to Broadway success.
