📰 News we're reading

• Valley Water wants to take over flood control efforts on San Francisquito Creek (padailypost.com) — Palo Alto residents along San Francisquito Creek are urging Valley Water to take charge of long-delayed flood control work, including potential flood walls, channel widening and a new Pope-Chaucer Bridge. Valley Water's board has unanimously agreed to seek a leadership role from the multi-city creek authority, which includes Palo Alto, East Palo Alto and Menlo Park representatives and has struggled with missed audits and leadership turnover.

• Palo Alto City Council approves 8-story housing complex (sanjosespotlight.com) — Palo Alto's City Council has unanimously approved a new eight‑story, 228‑unit housing complex at 762 San Antonio Road, accelerating the city's push to turn the commercial corridor into a dense residential neighborhood. The project uses state housing laws to exceed local zoning, raises questions about building design and bike access, and could begin construction in a few years once financing and plans are finalized.

• Palo Alto set to begin Flock audit amid growing public backlash (paloaltoonline.com) — Palo Alto is about to launch an independent audit of Flock Safety's license plate reader system, after revelations that local data was widely shared despite city policy. Council members will set the audit's scope Monday, weighing crime‑fighting benefits against privacy risks, data breaches, and strong calls from residents and nearby institutions to abandon the technology altogether.
