Tasks for a Spring-like January

More often than not, January is spent inside a warm house peering out the window at the blustery garden. But this Bay Area winter, so far, has been entirely different. It’s been warm enough that, uh-oh, some of the fruit trees are beginning to bud. We’ve had so little rain that water-loving plants like blueberries probably need a checkup and a deep soak. Plants, like roses or apples, that might not have gone into dormancy yet, should have their leaves stripped off of them anyway. If you didn’t get around to mulching in October and November you’ve been given a reprieve, you can still get out there and do it now. And while you’re tromping around, make sure you’ve got your clippers on hand because now is also a good time to clean up some of the pruning you tackled last month (the nub you should have cut cleaner, the branch you weren’t sure about taking out but now are.) Of course, if a Polar Vortex happens to swing our way don’t hesitate to get back indoors, sipping hot chocolate and thumbing through seed catalogues.
