Peninsula National Charity League Hosts Annual Holiday Tea

Mothers, daughters and their guests enjoyed the elegant affair hosted by the South Bay philanthropic organization.

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, CA – More than 500 guests attended the Peninsula Chapter of National Charity League's annual holiday tea held earlier this month in Palos Verdes Estates, a time-honored tradition where girls learn the skills of etiquette, greeting and conversation.

A focus for the mother-daughter event was to promote spending quality, personal time with others, without the distractions of today's digital devices.

“This year, we encouraged our Ticktockers to really embrace the tradition of the tea and engage in every aspect of the process,” Chapter President Lydia Ho said. “We felt it was important to challenge our girls to extend outside their comfort zone and sharpen their social skills by meeting or talking with someone new in order to build the kind of confidence that will serve
them well throughout their lives."

Three consecutive teas were held Dec. 9 with each tea involving two classes -- a host class that provided and served refreshments, plus a guest class that invited friends or relatives to join them.

The 2018 festivities, that included seven of the chapter’s past presidents, were overseen by Social Graces Tea Chair Michele Feller and held at the home of Patroness Britta Shannon and her three daughters, 16, 15 and 12, all active in the charity league.

"Exposure to this kind of cultural experience is really the intention of the tea and fulfills an important pillar of our chapter’s legacy,” Ho said.

Chartered in 1958 and one of the oldest and most established chapters in the country, the Peninsula Chapter of NCL is comprised of mothers and daughters, grades 7-12. The organization provides leadership and cultural experiences for members and works to support local community needs through financial aid and hands-on support.

Last year, the chapter’s Ticktockers volunteered some 15,000 hours at more than 30 South Bay philanthropic organizations, including its chapter-operated thrift shop in San Pedro, raising nearly $200,000 last year for academic scholarships and various charities.
