South Bay by Jackie Pandemic Survival Guide - Week 8
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

This week, the Mayors of the South Bay cities created a multi-phase Roadmap to Re-Open Beaches. THIS IS GOOD! The first step is putting together a plan and submitting it for approval to the LA Department of Public Health and the Board of Supervisors. This is how beaches in other areas successfully re-opened. It’s a process we have to go through and it will take some time (possibly by May 15), but hey, it’s a start! In addition, Governor Newsom is talking about certain businesses being allowed to re-open as soon as tomorrow, and the White House is planning to repurpose the coronavirus task force to focus on getting the country back to business. This isn’t over yet, not by a long shot, but maybe, just maybe, we’re getting on the right side of that curve. It’s nice to have some good news for a change! On another note, the South Bay has been experiencing a massive red tide and the bioluminescence has been off the charts. We rode our bikes to the beach several nights to check it out and it’s extraordinary. I’ve never before seen this phenomenon and it’s just SO FREAKING COOL! The beaches, bike paths, Strand, Esplanade, beach adjacent parking lots and parks are closed, but every night it’s been as crowded as the 4th of July with bumper to bumper traffic and crowds everywhere. Yes, we are still under ‘Stay at Home’ orders, but when Mother Nature puts on such a spectacular show, people WILL come!
Madrona Marsh is scheduled to re-open today, Thursday, May 7 with restrictions. For all the details, visit https://www.southbaybyjackie.com/madrona-marsh-re-open/.

LOCAL BUSINESS NEWS
• The Village Runner is now selling most of their merchandise online at https://villagerunner.com/.
I want to give a shout out to local news hound Charlene Nishimura. She’s been compiling a daily COVID-19 News Brief and gave me permission to post them to my website. These are concise, unbiased, news highlights and a convenient way to catch up on local, regional, national and international COVID-19 news and updates each day. They’re posted every afternoon to the Daily Blog page.
REGIONAL MESSAGE ON COVID-19 THREAT: California has ultimate authority to determine the measures taken by all state and local government officials in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The County of Los Angeles must comply with the state orders, but they can implement stricter policies based on regional concerns. Cities must also adhere to state and county measures, but can also implement stricter policies based on specific community needs. We hear your concerns. Please understand that we too are members of your communities. We see and hear the impacts this is having on individuals, families, and businesses. Please stay vigilant and adhere to the County’s Safer at Home Order so that we can move into the next phase of recovery.
CALIFORNIA’S FOUR STAGE PLAN TO RECOVERY: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Early this week, Governor Newsom outlined the four stages to recovery. While the dates are fluid and based on many indicators, we are likely weeks away from phase 2. There are no dates attached to each phase, but this is the criteria the state will use to transition to each stage of recovery. For details on the Governor’s plan, visit https://www.gov.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Update-on-California-Pandemic-Roadmap.pdf.
The South Bay Chambers of Commerce are asking the business community to take part in a COVID-19 Business Recovery Survey. Please take time to answer these questions so they can look at and collectively address the most pressing needs of our South Bay businesses and organizations. A significant number of businesses across sectors and industries have been impacted by COVID-19 and banding together to weather the storm and identify collective solutions can have a more meaningful effect. Recovery will not happen all at once or by a specific date, it will come in phases. This is an opportunity to start planning recovery and coming up with ideas, solutions and best practices that will help our community of businesses and organizations to be ready when the State and County directives to reopen are rolled out. To take the survey, click here.

The South Bay Show podcast will continue to keep the phones lines open for community members to share information and we encourage everyone to tune in for the latest local news. This week, we’re encouraging local businesses to call in and tell us about their Mother’s Day specials. If you have information you’d like to share, call in to the show at 714-242-5288 every Thursday morning between 8 and 9 a.m. and we’ll get you on the air! Listen to the program live at 8 a.m. or at your leisure at https://www.southbaybyjackie.com/south-bay-news-covid-19-updates-week-8/.
Tomorrow morning on The South Bay Show: Manhattan Beach Chamber 360, our guests will be Rebecca Warfield and Prajit Gopal from Looped, and we’ll learn how Looped recently stepped up to help artists capture revenue from their performances, since the COVID-19 pandemic has wiped out their touring revenues, by becoming the ONLY platform that allows for a live stream event to be ticketed with a General Admission or VIP option, allowing for virtual meet and greets to happen within the same platform. Most importantly, LOOPED is just the virtual venue. Event entry can be sold, raffled, contested, or given away via any method or website you prefer. Listen to the program live at 8 a.m. or at your leisure at https://www.southbaybyjackie.com/rebecca-warfield-prajit-gopal-looped/.
Happy housebound Mother’s Day to all! Stay well, be safe and take care.
