South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide August 29, 2019

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

Can someone explain to me where August went? Didn’t it just start? I took a Strand cruise yesterday during my lunch break and encountered empty beaches, empty piers, empty parking lots. How ironic is it that we’re experiencing the finest weather of the year, but everyone is back to work or back in school? Thankfully, we have the extended Labor Day weekend to ease our re-entry to the post-vacation routine. There’s nothing like a three-day weekend to wrap up a carefree summer season!
The community is invited to attend a Walk to End Alzheimer’s Fundraiser tonight, Thursday, August 29 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Uncorked, The Wine Shop. Wine tastings will be offered for $20 and 50% of the sales will be donated to Alzheimer’s. There will also be beautiful and trendy jewelry by Park Lane with 25% of the jewelry sales donated to the organization. The event features appetizers, raffles and live music. Help spread the word by inviting your friends. Anyone who brings a friend will receive a special gift! For additional information, visit the Facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/2531189933598048/. Uncorked, The Wine Shop is located at 302 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.
The Lomita Chamber of Commerce will host the Legacy Dance & Fitness Ribbon Cutting on Friday, August 30 at 4 p.m. The community is invited to join the Chamber as they celebrate this local business and learn more about their fun and high-energy classes designed to get your groove on and burn some calories! This event is FREE to attend! For additional information, visit the Facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/622864948201645/. Legacy Dance & Fitness is located at 2408 Lomita Boulevard, Lomita, CA 90717.
The Redondo Pier Association is pleased to welcome United States Navy Band, The Destroyers, in concert on Friday, August 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the pier. This performance is part of L.A. Fleet Week and a special presentation of the Summer of Music free concerts on the Redondo Beach Pier. Blankets or low-backed beach chairs are recommended. A variety of food and beverages are available for take-out to enjoy during the concerts at over 30 restaurants on the Redondo Beach Pier, International Boardwalk and Redondo Beach Marina. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.redondopier.com/events/. Redondo Beach Pier is located at 500 Fisherman’s Wharf, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. The concert will take place on The Boardwalk at The Pier (below Kincaid’s). The remaining summer concerts on Thursday, August 29 and Saturday, August 31 will take place at the west end of the Redondo Beach Pier.
Last one of the season….. The Roadium Open Air Market presents Summer Fridays Drive-In Movies every Friday (August 30) this summer. The Roadium is reviving its classic 1950’s drive-in for a one-of-a-kind movie-going experience this summer. Every Friday night, guests can enjoy a great film in this throwback retro setting, along with food trucks, movie concessions, and more! Last one of the season…. The City of Redondo Beach hosts Movies Under the Stars every Friday night in August at Alta Vista Park. This FREE event is open to the public and the community is invited to bring your lawn chairs, blankets and popcorn down to Alta Vista Park at dusk and enjoy a night of cinema under the stars. The movies start at dusk. The final movie of the season, The Black Stallion, will be shown on Friday, August 30. The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce is proud to present Fiesta Hermosa Saturday, August 31 through Monday, September 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day in downtown Hermosa Beach. The family-friendly event includes live music, carnival rides, an enormous variety of food and beverages alongside painters, sculptors, photographers, handcrafters and jewelers. Within these vendors, they’ll be featuring over 40 local vendors and over 20 local artists. Stay entertained throughout the holiday weekend with the Kiddie Carnival’s 30-foot slide, Ferris wheel, merry go round, mechanical rides and games. There is also a petting zoo, pony rides and face painting. Additionally, Fiesta Siesta returns to offer a tranquil setting for parents and their babies to rest and recharge. Adults can support several local nonprofit groups by enjoying the Charity Beer & Wine Garden. Popular food court vendors will return, and food trucks stationed at the intersection of Pier Avenue and Manhattan Avenue will be accompanied by an acoustic music stage featuring shaded tables and seating. On Saturday, there will be a one-time reunion show at the Main Stage from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. put on by, “My High School Rebellion”, a project featuring members of Black Flag, Woolly Bandits, The Freeze, and Circle One with various guest vocalists. New this year to Fiesta Hermosa will be the, “Free To Be Me Drum Circle” created by Sabina Sandoval. The community will be able to engage in this interactive musical experience on Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. The Fiesta footprint will be expanded up Pier Avenue to Monterey Blvd. This extension allows for additional ADA parking and gives the Chamber the opportunity to offer booths to more local businesses, free expression groups and non-profits. The Chamber worked diligently to secure not only the expansion, but approval for booths on both sides of Hermosa Avenue (as opposed to just the west side, as required last year). The Chamber is very pleased to announce they received the green light from the City on all counts. ‘Fiesta de las Artes’ – a 10-booth experiential art zone at Fiesta Hermosa the Chamber created in partnership with South Bay Artist Collective – will be held in the parking lot of Laurel Tavern (1220 Hermosa Avenue) and is sponsored by the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis. There will be interactive opportunities for children, including canvas painting and designing t-shirts. Stop by and see live artists in action such as Paul Roustan (Saturday, 11 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.) and Josh Barnes (Sunday and Monday, all day). Free shuttle buses run to Fiesta Hermosa from the Northrop Grumman parking lot at the southwest corner of Aviation Boulevard and 33rd Street in Manhattan Beach. The pick-up and drop-off location on the venue will be at the intersection of 10th Street and Hermosa Avenue from 7:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. Locals are encouraged to walk or bike to Fiesta Hermosa and use the free bike valet lot at the beach staffed by the South Bay Bicycle Coalition, which offers air for tires and on-site diagnostic checkups. Please bring reusable bags for purchases as vendors will not have plastic bags in cooperation with the City’s environmental initiatives. Patrons of legal age planning to enjoy the Charity Beer & Wine Garden must have valid ID with them for entry. Several Chamber members are offering special promotions that attendees can take advantage of by picking up special “Love Our Locals” coupons available at the Information Booth during the event. For additional information, visit the website at http://fiestahermosa.net/.
