South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide June 18, 2020
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

As you may or may not know, Patch has city specific pages, Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach. I used to post the South Bay By Jackie Weekend Guide to each. But now due to new limitations imposed by Patch.com, which limits me to choosing only one Patch site each week (alternating weekly) instead of all of them, I will no longer be posting the South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide to any of the four local Patch pages. If you would like to continue reading the Weekend Guide each Thursday, you can subscribe for FREE at https://www.SouthBayByJackie.com to receive it in your email or you can view it on the website. Scroll down any page on the website and on the right side you'll find a subscription box.

While I’m still receiving and posting information on virtual events, the only upcoming, in-person event is the Torrance Antique Street Faire, which will re-open on Sunday, June 28 (Yay!). Yesterday, I received word the Redondo Pier concerts are cancelled through the end of July. They hope to start them in August, but it’s a wait and see situation. I also received confirmation that there will be NO Fourth of July fireworks at Seaside Lagoon or El Segundo (Boo!). It’s never a good idea to assume anything, but it’s a pretty good bet all local Fourth of July celebrations will be cancelled. What a bummer…. makes you want to get out of town and go someplace where you can celebrate properly with the rocket’s red glare. Lomita’s Movies Under the Stars is still listed on the city calendar starting July 11. Other than that, my website calendar is blank until October. It’s going to be an awfully quiet summer, but I’ll keep chugging along, waiting for the day I can post an event we can all attend in person. Won’t that be something? On another note, my podcast partner, Joe Terry, has taken a teaching gig this summer, so I’ve taken over hosting duties for the Thursday show. That should keep me on my toes!
Destination: Art is hosting the Virtual Associate Artists’ Show through July 5. The Associate Artists’ exhibition is online now at https://www.destination-art.net/onlineartshow and most of the art work is available for purchase. For inquiries, email localartists@destination-art.net. Visitors to the Virtual Gallery will be able to vote for their favorite painting for the Art Lovers’ Choice Award, which will be announced at the end of June.

The tenth annual South Bay Water-Wise Garden Tour is seeking beautiful and creative, drought tolerant gardens to display for its self-drive tour in October. For your garden to be considered, please contact Peggy at 310-515-0934. The proceeds from the garden tour go to support the Gardena Willows Wetlands Preserve.
A message from the South Coast Botanic Garden… The world has felt like a scary place the past few months. While many businesses around us closed, South Coast Botanic Garden remained open as a much-needed place of hope for our community. Staying open has been no small feat. We acted swiftly and thoughtfully to implement solutions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety of staff and visitors, working under guidance from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. While we remain open as a safe place for all, it certainly is no longer business as usual. Many of the Garden’s typical sources of funding — including public programs, classes, plant sales, festivals and event rentals — have all been put on hold. The Garden is losing an estimated $4,000 per day during this crisis — a hard hit for our small organization. That is why we are asking for your help today. You can help us weather this storm! Can we count on your support of our 2020 Flourish Fund with a fully tax-deductible gift today? To donate, visit https://southcoastbotanicgarden.org/shop/donations/flourish-fund-donations-to-the-garden/. Your gift of any amount will allow our beautiful Garden to flourish for years to come and continue to unite people through nature. We are grateful for your continued and generous support. Any amount you can contribute helps. With deep appreciation, Adrienne Lao Nakashima, CEO
