South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide May 24, 2018

Everything you want to know about what is happening in the South Bay this weekend!

I’m trying to get a handle on where the last five months have gone… is it just me, or did Memorial Day Weekend sneak up on anyone else? I’ve been so busy, I couldn’t see the forest for the trees… more like, I couldn’t see the ocean through the pesky May Gray. So here we are at the unofficial start of summer with so much to look forward to – outdoor concerts and movies on the beach, BBQs and picnics, car shows and art walks, vacations and road trips, hiking and biking, staying up late and sleeping in, festivals and fairs, hot days and sultry nights, camping and s’mores, fireworks and sandy feet. Now’s the time to pull out the whites, stripes and linens because it all starts this weekend!

The Manhattan Beach Chamber YPC presents Mixology 101 tonight,Thursday, May 24 from 4 to 5 p.m. at Zinc @ Shade Hotel. I’m not going to this event – it sold out in minutes – but I’m looking forward to stopping by and seeing the set up! Outstanding in the Field presents aSecret Sea Cove Beach Event tonight, Thursday, May 24 at 4 p.m. in Manhattan Beach. OITF will be setting the table just north of the Manhattan Beach Pier. The South Bay seaside feast will be a celebration of a healthier ocean ecosystem, featuring locally sourced, sustainably harvested seafood, and the people whose livelihood it is to bring it to shore. They’ve gathered an exceptionally stellar and knowledgeable Southern California chef team, who all really swim the swim when it comes to sourcing sustainable seafood. Since the table will be set on the sand and OITF Founder Jim Denevan is famous for drawing in sand, you can expect an artwork alongside the table. Tickets are $235 per person. Handmade guacamole, crepes, and shaved ice creations are fair favorites. You’ll also find cotton candy, caramel apples, fresh squeezed lemonade and funnel cakes. The always popular Charity Beer & Wine Garden features a selection of beer, wine and icy coolers served by local ‘celebrities’, including the mayor, city councilmen and non-profit organizations such as the HB Rotary, Kiwanis, HB Education Foundation and other civic organizations. The Click It or Ticket Campaign is already in full swing for the Memorial Day Weekend! As the unofficial start of summer, the Memorial Day holiday weekend is a busy time for Californians. Each year, the highways fill with families in vehicles, on their way to start their summer vacations. To help keep drivers and passengers safe, our local Police Departments are reminding motorists to Click It or Ticket. The national seat belt campaign takes place May 21 through June 3, concurrent with the busy travel season. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly half (48%) of the passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in 2016 were unrestrained. At night from 6 p.m. to 5:59 a.m., that number soared to 56 percent of those killed. That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign is nighttime enforcement. Officers will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations day and night. In California, the minimum penalty for a seat belt violation is $162. If you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please ask them to consider changing their habits. Help us spread this life-saving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction. Seat belts save lives, and everyone—child and adult—needs to remember to buckle up—every trip, every time.
