South Bay Weekend Guide March 2, 2017

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

Elections are next Tuesday, March 7, and while all residents of LA County will have the opportunity to vote on Measure H, some South Bay cities will be voting for their Mayors, City Council and school board members, and will decide the fate of a couple of measures. Redondo residents will cast their votes on Measure C. For the sake of clarity…. a ‘yes’ vote will shut down any improvements in the marina and burden the residents with $200 million in taxes. A ‘no’ vote will allow the city to continue with The Waterfront redevelopment process. We had an in-depth conversation on this topic yesterday morning on The South Bay Show and I highly recommend taking the time to listen before casting your vote. This crucial vote will determine the future of the marina. It’s a big, important issue, so be sure to get out and vote next Tuesday!

El Segundo Museum of Art presents Experience 27: ELSEGUNDISSIMO on Sunday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with curatorial remarks at 2 p.m. ELSEGUNDISSIMO is a crowd-sourced Experience, based on community feedback. How can we strengthen the connection between the east and west sides of Sepulveda? Whatever you can think of will be addressed. Would you like to put a smile on your face when you enter the City? What would put tears in your eyes when you leave town? ESMoA has been collecting community members’ thoughts and wishes, and in a unique democratic process have asked local, national and international artists and architects to come up with solutions. Attendees can also participate in CREATE: A Time Capsule from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Explore ELSEGUNDISSIMO with family and friends, take part in a scavenger hunt, and create and leave a drawing or letter for the time capsule! A Basq Kitchen, in collaboration with Culinary Historian Richard Foss, presents The Thoughtful Feast: Supper in a California Basque Boardinghouse on Sunday, March 5 from 5 to 9:30 p.m. at A Basq Kitchen. One of the great dining experiences of the Western US is the Basque boardinghouse supper, a communal event at which guests sit at long tables and enjoy an array of starters followed by portions of roast lamb, braised chicken, french fries, vegetables, cheeses, and dessert. This style of dining was once popular in the Frenchtown area of Los Angeles and is still popular in Nevada and the Central Valley, but it has vanished from Los Angeles County. One restaurant here in the South Bay keeps Basque heritage alive: A Basq Kitchen, which usually serves the distinctive seafood and tapas of the Basque coastal region of France and Spain, for one night will serve a menu from California’s Basque past. Basque Country native and Chef Bernard “Beñat” Ibarra will explain Basque heritage and offer the following feast:

Basque Bread with Freshly Churned Butter, Cabbage Soup, Pickled Tongue, Baked Bean Casserole, Cottage Cheese, and Salad | Pairing: Basque Wine Punch
Braised Chicken Chillindron | Pairing: Basque White Wine
Roasted Grass-Fed Leg of Lamb with Sautéed Garlic and Chorizo | Pairing: Basque Red Wine
Seasonal Vegetables, Hand-Cut French Fries
Basque Cheese with Nuts and Fig Jam, Ice Cream and Fruit Cocktail | Pairing: Basque Vermouth

Culinary Historian Richard Foss will give a short introduction to Basque food traditions in the US, Chef Ibarra will explain the cultural traditions of his home, and everyone will enjoy a superb dinner by the water in Redondo Beach. Dinner is $75 for all National Food & Beverage Foundation (NatFAB) and Culinary Historians of Southern California members, or $85 for non-members, and includes tax and gratuity. NatFAB membership is available to all at http://www.natfab.org/membership. Space is limited, and reservations are required. There are two seatings at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will support NatFAB, home of PacFAB, MOTAC, and the Southern Food & Beverage Museum. For additional information and to make a reservation, call310-926-6393 or visit the website at https://natfab.org/events/supper-in-a-basque-boardinghouse. A Basq Kitchen is located at 136 International Boardwalk Redondo Beach, CA, 90277.
