GLEN ELLEN, CA — A Santa Rosa pest control specialist recently encountered a career first: 700 pounds of acorns hidden in the walls of an area home.

The culprit? A woodpecker that’s nuts for nuts.

The owners of the home contacted Nick’s Extreme Pest Control when they saw worms coming out of the wall. The creatures looked like maggots, but were in fact meal worms, according to the business.

And behind the worms? Acorns. Thousands and thousands of acorns.

“Unreal,” the business said late last month in a Facebook post, which included photos of the mountains of acorns pouring from holes in the walls.

“Never came across something like this.”

The nuts filled eight garbage bags, according to the business. Evidence of how the acorns got into the walls abounded, as there were hundreds of holes in the home’s wood siding.

The acorn woodpecker is a notorious hoarder and is commonly found along the coast of California, according to the National Audubon Society.

Fortunately, business owner Nick Castro told the Washington Post his services have not been needed by the Glen Ellen homeowners since he removed the nuts in December.
