$8 a Gallon for Regular Gasoline? Sausalito Station Owner Says Why

The gas station's owner provided an interesting explanation for his prices this week.

Drivers looking to fill up at a Northern California gas station this week had quite the sticker shock when pulling up to the Bridgeway Gas Station in Sausalito.

Yelper Eddie H. snapped the photo above of the high prices, at just under $8 a gallon on Thursday— well above the average Bay Area gas price of $3.41.

Asked by local media outlets as to his reasoning, the station’s owner, David Mann, said he was tired of people complaining.

“People would complain about a 2 to 3 cent difference with other stations, so I raised the gas prices to almost 8 dollars to shut up the complainers. And it worked. They stopped complaining,” Mann told KTVU.

The independent station owner further elaborated that he used to have more competitive prices with larger stations, but he has been forced to increase them as his supply costs go up.

“People in Marin County have a lot of money. They don’t care about $2 or $3 higher per gallon,” he told SF Gate. “I don’t want to take advantage of it. I just want to get rid of the complainers.”

Prices were down to about $5 by Friday.
