PETALUMA, CA — The Petaluma Police Department said Sunday it cited nine motorists during a Saturday night checkpoint to screen for driving under the influence violations.

The checkpoint, the first in three years due to the pandemic and staffing issues, took place at East Washington Street at Copeland Street from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The location was picked, police said, because since Jan. 1 there have been 23 DUI arrests on East Washington Street.

A total of 1,217 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, and officers screened 971 vehicles. Of those, 18 were further evaluated for DUI and 15 for driver's license violations. One suspect was arrested on a driving under the influence charge; seven for driving unlicensed; and one for possession of an open container of alcohol in a vehicle. One vehicle was towed.
