Apartment Fire Displaces Three Petaluma Residents Monday

A stove left on and unattended was possible cause.

An unattended stove is suspected of causing a fire that displaced three apartment residents in Petaluma on Monday afternoon, a fire battalion chief said.

A young man that lives in the apartment at 620 G St. with his parents told firefighters he was cooking before he left the apartment and inadvertently left the stove on, Petaluma Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Schach said.

The fire in the two-story west Petaluma apartment was reported at 3:54 p.m.

The blaze engulfed the kitchen, dining and living rooms of the first floor of the apartment, Schach said.

Intense heat at the top of an inside stairwell prevented firefighters from searching the second floor for fire and victims, Schach said. Firefighters cut holes in the roof to allow gases and smoke to escape the second floor.

The fire was controlled within 15 minutes and did not reach adjoining units or the common attic space, according to Schach.

Investigators do not know if the smoke detectors in the apartment were working, but the apartment’s fire alarm system did not activate, Schach said. There were no injuries to residents, pets or firefighters.

The apartment is uninhabitable and the American Red Cross assisted the family with temporary shelter, food and clothing, Schach said.

The fire caused approximately $150,000 in damage.
