Batteries Spark Fire In Garage Of Petaluma Home

Breaking: The batteries used for remote-controlled cars were being charged when they caught fire, a Petaluma Fire battalion chief said.

PETALUMA, CA -- A good neighbor and a sprinkler system helped save a Petaluma family's home Monday, a fire battalion chief said.

A Petaluma fire inspector reported a garage fire at 440 Lindberg Circle around 1:10 p.m. The sprinkler system doused the flames, but there was still smoke inside the residence, Petaluma Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Holden
said.

The fire started when batteries from remote controlled cars that had been charging set fire to a plastic table in the garage. Fortunately, a sprinkler head was directly above the table, Holden said.

The family of five was not home at the time, but a neighbor heard the sprinkler system water flow alarm and saw water flowing from the garage, Holden said.

The neighbor, who had keys to the house, found a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, went to the garage and discovered the fire was out, Holden said.
