Coroner IDs Petaluma Man Killed In Friday Crash

The tragic cliff accident was on Highway 1.

The Sonoma County coroner’s office has identified 52-year-old Richard M. Kolodin as the Petaluma man who died in a solo-vehicle crash on state Highway 1 near Jenner Friday afternoon.

A California Highway Patrol officer spotted Kolodin’s vehicle about 500 feet down a cliff off Highway 1 just north of Meyer’s Grade Road on the Sonoma Coast around 5 p.m., CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.

The officer was unable to find a way to get to the vehicle and fog prevented a helicopter from responding and reaching the occupant of the car on Friday, Sloat said.

The Sonoma County sheriff’s helicopter Henry 1 lowered a CHP officer to the vehicle on Saturday. Kolodin was ejected from the vehicle and probably was not wearing a seatbelt, Sloat said.

Speeding might have caused the crash that is still under investigation, Sloat said.
