Double Decker Bus, Hippie-Style

This eye-catching vehicle was recently seen on the streets of Petaluma.

Hippie buses are a common sight in Northern California and a reminder that the Summer of Love spirit is alive and well here. But this tricked out bus — or shall we call it a tripped-out bus — was a real eye-catcher when it was parked in downtown Petaluma recently because of the 1970s-era Volkwagen camper growing out of the top. It was as if the bottom bus had drive through a nuclear disaster zone and suddenly grown a mini version of itself.

The bus is owned by Common Vision, a nonprofit that, according to its website, "works every day to create real changes in health, hunger, environmental justice, and climate change through inspirational education and on-the-ground community action. ... Common Vision's mobile operation weaves a wide network in California as it creates and inspires collaborations amongst schools, farms, volunteers, mentors, nurseries, musicians, and native peoples."

The Common Vision site goes on to describe environmental education mission and its fleet of biofuel-powered vehicles.
