Motorcyclist's Leg Amputated After Petaluma Crash

PETALUMA, CA – An Oakland man's right leg was amputated Wednesday after his motorcycle collided with a SUV west of Petaluma, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Andrew Irby, 31, crossed two solid yellow lines in an attempt to pass two vehicles on eastbound Bodega Avenue west of Thompson Lane around 2 p.m., CHP Officer Kimberly Lemons said.

Irby's motorcycle struck the left side of a 2013 Ford C-Max hybrid wagon that was making a left turn into a driveway. He suffered major injuries and his right leg was amputated at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, Lemons said.

The driver of the Ford was not injured, and there were no indications either driver was impaired.

Based on witness statements, excessive speed is considered a factor in the crash, Lemons said.
