The fatal incident happened early Wednesday on Arnold Drive, the California Highway Patrol said.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A man died early Wednesday morning in Sonoma Valley when he was struck by a car while standing on the side of a road near a tractor, the California Highway Patrol said.

The fatal crash was reported at 1:22 a.m. Wednesday on Arnold Drive near Olive Avenue.

A 28-year-old Sonoma man was driving a 2015 Ford northbound on Arnold, passing Olive, at unknown speeds when he struck the victim, CHP Officer Jaret Paulson said.

The victim, a 28-year Woodland man, was standing next to the driver's side of a tractor that was at a complete stop on the east shoulder of Arnold, south of Olive.

A 28-year-old Vallejo man was stopped in the tractor — a New Holland pulling a utility trailer — and was talking with the victim when for unknown reasons the driver of the Ford allowed his car to drift from the northbound lane of Arnold Drive and he collided with the back left of the trailer, Paulson said.

The Ford continued in a northerly direction and struck the victim, causing fatal injuries, Paulson.

The tractor driver was taken to Providence Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa for treatment of minor injuries.

The Ford driver also suffered minor injuries but declined medical treatment at the scene, according to the CHP.

The Sonoma County Coroner's Office responded and was expected to identify the victim once his next of kin were properly notified.
